During this Talk all aspects of dyeing and eco printing are covered. It is an overview of natural dyeing and ideal for those who are totally new to Natural dyes and sustainability in textiles. This session can be followed by more in depth Talks with demonstrations outlined in the following presentations.

Natural dyes are derived from plants, invertebrates, or minerals and used on textiles and paper. This session focuses on the plants and explores the history and tradition of plants and trees for colour. The audience will be invited to participate and make their own dyes from different parts of plants.

Plants are widely used to print onto fabric and paper. Plant material needs heat and moisture to release coloured prints and this process is demonstrated. There will be an invitation for the audience to take part in eco printing The work of current textile Dyers is also covered in this Talk.
NATURAL COLOUR -The Dye Process developed

This talk covers the dyeing process. Explaining the process and the many variables. Different plants will be used to extract colour and the various factors which modify and affect the results. The audience are invited to try dyeing silk and cotton samples then discuss how these could be used. Modern, ethnic and traditional dyeing examples are also shown during this Talk.
NATURAL DYES -Scientific Research and Sustainability in fashion

My own work is grounded in sustainability and started with an in depth research into plants, natural dyes and environmental factors. The session considers sustainability and the current situation in the Fashion industry and ethical challenges and new research into bio-colour. Experiments using modifiers are used to demonstrate the chemistry of dyeing.

A brief look into the history and process of natural dyes and their impact on the environment and with special reference to East Anglia. The Talk includes evidence from the Bronze Age which includes archaeological finds at Lofts, focusing on specific plants such as nettles and indigo and finally the impact of moving away from natural dyes on our environment
